How To Build Backyard Custom BBQ Pits

By Cynthia Reed

A backyard barbeque can be a great DIY project. It can be built below or above ground and as complex or simple as you wish. People who enjoy cooking outdoors love owning custom BBQ pits. The pit can also be used as a smoker and is relatively inexpensive, and takes little time and labor to make. The design can be as complex or simple as you want to make it. Begin the project by developing a plan that considers safety first and quality construction.

Make sure that you choose a location for the pit that works for your yard. The area should be level and not to far away from your home. It is more convenient to be close to the house so you do not have to carry the food and cooking utensils too far.

In addition, you want to be sure that smoke from the pit does not blow into your home or surrounding neighbor homes. Above all, you want to consider fire safety. Be aware of trees that may hang over the pit, distance from wood fences, and distance from buildings.

Choose the type of pit that you want to build. Make sure that you have adequate space for your choice. Make sure you consider the cost of tools and materials and the time you will need to build. You want to have the time and everything you need to finish the project. Ask family and friends for help with the job. When the pit is complete you can treat them to BBQ.

Draw out the plan. Make it simple or complex depending on what you prefer. Search online for DIY plans. If you are not an experienced builder, start with a simple blueprint. Lay the plan out in the location you have chosen to get an idea of its shape and size. You may decide on a rectangle shape with waist high sides. You can add a cooling rack or smoker if you like.

Once your plan is drawn out you can collect your tools and the materials you need. A simple design will not require too many tools. You will need mortar, bricks, a shovel, a grill grate, level, and a cover for the pit. You may also want to collect some gravel, bricks, sand, and paving slabs.

Start by digging the hole of the pit the diameter of the grill cover. The pit can be as deep as a cinderblock or a brick that is turned vertical. The best shapes for a barbeque pit is a rectangle or square. Using bricks or cinderblocks around the inside edge of the pit will provide a solid structure. Mortar is used to hold bricks together and keep them from falling inside the hole.

Make sure that the grill sits flat over the top of the pit. Lay gravel and slabs on the grass around the edge of your pit as a defensible space. If you do not use gravel or slabs clear the grass that surrounds the pit. You are now ready to barbeque and enjoy the pit you built.
