Organic Farming & How Similar Maintenance Parlays Into Gaming

By Rob Sutter

If you're talking about video games that I am anticipating this year, "Animal Crossing: New Leaf" definitely stands as one of them. Keep in mind that the Animal Crossing franchise is not one about epic stories or quick platforming but rather living life. A life simulator such as this should bore someone like me but, surprisingly enough, it's easily one of the most effective series of games to note. There is work to be done in town, though, which is something I can tie into organic farming as well.

Animal Crossing is pretty easy to get into, especially when you consider that each title in the series starts off in similar fashion. You have just arrived in a new place and, without anyone by your side, it's up to you to make a new life for yourself. Along the way, you meet a variety of neighbors to socialize with and go about a job that has you running about town, too. This is the type of game that never becomes boring, though, which is one of the greatest points about any game one can name.

Of course, maintaining the town is important, especially when the forces of nature begin to take hold. For example, let's say that you leave the town unattended and you don't play for a great number of days. When you turn it back on, it's possible that you'll be greeted by a town overrun with weeds, which have to be plucked out of the ground in order to keep beauty at a high level. If not, it's possible that neighbors will move away and others will come in their place.

It's clear that maintenance is going to be found in this game, which is why I spoke about organic farming early on as well. You have to consider the fact that consumers are most important because they are the ones who want to purchase the products. As a result, quality has to remain substantial and being able to care for the field and utilize only natural properties is recommended steps. I believe that it's worth looking at networks such as Colle Farmers Market to see how communication can grow, too.

The concepts of organic farming can be found in other games, though, if you take the time to look. The Harvest Moon series is one that I have a good amount of respect for because it has taken such concepts and made them fun for the player. Personally, I wouldn't have thought that taking care of animals or growing plants could actually be enjoyable in the sense of a video game. However, as I have learned, surprises are still to be had in the world of video games.
