Ways On How To Ship A Live Lobster

By Jeffrey Murphy

Many people find a lobster that is cooked when fresh to be a delicacy. Cooking it when it is alive happens to be one of many ways it is prepared best. They, however, pose a great challenge when it comes to transporting them as they are adapted to cold salty water environments. It is not easy to create a similar environment in your transporting equipment. It therefore takes some planning in order to deliver a live lobster at your home.

For one to get positive results in the transportation of these creatures, be it from a grocery store or a fish market, proper planning has to be done. You should make sure that at any time they should be moist and cool while shipping them to your house. Lack of oxygen also happens to be one of the reason most of them die on the way. It is therefore important to keep them cool as this helps them use less oxygen amount.

In high temperature environments the lobsters use a lot of oxygen. This makes them more susceptible to dying out of deprivation of oxygen. Since they use gills, keeping them moist helps them maintain their breathing. It is possible to maintain a live, hard-shelled lobster, outside water for as long as five days when you handle them properly.

By keeping lobsters moist, it does not mean that you keep them submerged. In fact, the lobsters are better off when kept out of water as they are being transported. It is, therefore, advisable that you avoid packing them directly on ice since when the ice melts it may cause problems. By keeping lobsters in fresh water, they will swell up and probably burst. Use of dry ice is also not advisable due to production of huge amounts of carbon dioxide that could lead to asphyxiation of the lobsters.

Transporting these creatures in sea water also puts them in danger of suffocation, unless the equipment they are being transported in allows for aeration. They will tend to use up the dissolved oxygen in sea water at a very high rate in a situation of a container with no aeration allowance. To maintain the recommended levels of temperatures and moisture, refrigeration trucks will be the best option.

There is importance in keeping lobsters cool before packing them so as to attain perfect results. Acclimatization is the reason for this, since they get moved from warm temperatures to cold ones. Even though the lobsters are believed to be able to handle warm to cold temperatures changes well, rapid changes in temperature will definitely affect them.

It is also advised not to feed them for two or three days before shipping them. They use more oxygen and have a high chance of vomiting when transported on full stomach. One should also ensure that he or she packs them closely, though they should not be too tight as their shells might break during transportation.

Boiling the lobsters when they are alive is important because these creatures do not stay fresh for a long period of time while they are not in water. However, preheating it would help keep it fresh for up to four days with the help of freezing. Care should be taken while preparing lobsters that were previously preserved not to overcook and make them hard.
