Old Pastry Recipes In New England

By Linda Snyder

Some foods traditionally prepared today were made a long time ago in Europe. Today, most of those old recipes are adapted and changed, but some are still prepared as they were. Every region has its own tradition, and here you will find some of those really popular pastry recipes in New England that can be made really easily, and taste great.

Boston cream pie is one of most popular desserts that come from New England. It doesn't take too much time to prepare, and it really is tasty and moist, just a kind of a dessert everybody enjoys. For the cake, you will need following ingredients. 2 eggs, 1 1/2 cup sugar, 2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour, 3 tsp. Baking powder, a little bit of salt, 1/3 cup sunflower oil, 1 cup milk and some vanilla extract.

Separate eggs and mix the egg whites adding one half cup of sugar. Sift dry ingredients together. Combine milk, egg yolks, vanilla and oil, and mix it all together with dry ingredients. Gently combine the mixture with egg whites. Grease and lightly flour your mold, spread the mixture in and bake on 350F until done. Let it cool and remove from the pan.

For the cream, you will need 1/3 cup sugar, 3 tbsp. Of cake flour, a little bit of salt, 1 1/4 cups milk, 1 egg, 1 tbsp. Of butter and some vanilla extract. Combine sugar, flour, egg and salt. Gradually add milk and mix well. Cook over medium heat until it thickens, stirring constantly. Stir in butter and vanilla. Cover and let it cool. Slice cake in half, fill with cream filling, place the top back on the cake and finish with cooked chocolate glaze.

Chocolate glaze is also really easy to make. Mix together one teaspoon vanilla, one and half cup sugar and three spoon of water. Cook at medium heat, add one and half ounce unsweetened chocolate and stir until melted. Mix with two table spoons of butter and generously pour over your tasty cake. Let it cool and you can enjoy in this old but still appealing dessert.

Maple Apple Crisp is really easy to make and everybody can do it, even if they have no experience in making desserts. Peel and slice four large apples and combine them with four tablespoon lemon juice, one tbs.ground cinnamon and maybe half a cup of good maple syrup. Mix it all together well and set aside for a while.

Take one cup of uncooked Quaker rolled oats, 1/3 cup of flour, 1/2 cup almonds, thinly sliced, two tablespoon of vegetable oil and the same quantity of maple syrup and mix it all together with one tablespoon of high quality almond extract. Mix well and let rest for a while. Now, back to your apples. It's time to take care of them.

You should preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease the mold first. Put the mixture of apples and other ingredients in the oven, covered, and bake for up to 40 minutes. Now it's time to spread the topping on baked apple mixture and put it back again into the oven, this time without the foil. Bake for half an hour or so, the topping should be crisp and golden by then. Cool and enjoy.
