Spaghetti Squash Recipes Help Cut Carbs

By David Johnson

The culinary creations that some people come up with these days not only taste wonderful but some are even good enough to eat every day. Many recipes encourage people to eat more vegetables and people are saying that vegetarian entrees have come a long way. One new innovation that is growing in popularity is spaghetti squash recipes that are pretty easy to put together.

Although some think of using ribbon cut zucchini, there is actually a winter squash that has a slightly stringy texture when cooked. The yellow flesh slightly resembles spaghetti but the taste is different. Where zucchini has a slightly sweet taste, some cooks recommend adding a little garlic salt and pepper after roasting in a regular oven.

Once this type of squash has been roasted, the flesh may be separated with a fork and topped with a sauce or flavored olive oil. Other squash types may be sliced and roasted, or eaten raw but can be paired with a number of sauces. Anyone who is undecided may want to choose according to the other recipe ingredients.

Since it can be topped like regular pasta, there are few limitations, including the addition of certain types of seafood. For those who want the full heartiness without the extra fat, turkey or meatless products may be substituted. If one is looking to cut their cooking time in half, they may want to try a natural pasta sauce that comes ready to heat and eat.

Besides the health factor, these recipes are also a filling substitute for pasta. For some, white or wheat flour normally used can make digestion difficult or create a heavy feeling. Additionally, the preparation of the squash is even easier since most people hate to drain pasta or do not have time to make it from scratch.

There are even recipes that can be enjoyed any time of day. Most breakfast recipes use different types of starch as a less starchy substitute for hash brown potatoes or potato pancakes. Whether cooked on a stovetop or baked in a muffin cup, these shredded vegetables make a nice companion for eggs or protein for a balanced breakfast that does not feel too heavy.

The different types of squash have varied textures when cooked but can be made into numerous entrees. Besides pumpkin, many of the seeds may be enjoyed as a snack when toasted. Oftentimes, the shell can double as a decorative touch for food display, as the shape and color can make a nice contrast.

There are also wonderful recipes to be found in a number of books and periodicals, along with streaming video cooking sessions. If spaghetti squash is not available due to the season, other types can be cut to resemble long, thin strings. While some zoodle makers have a lot of parts and require electricity, there are a few manual versions that are easy to clean and can be stored anywhere.
