Taking Your Cooking Ability To New Heights Using Can Iron Skillets

By Janel Weisser

If you happen to be similar to me, then you most likely were raised preparing and serving everything made in a pan or skillet coated with teflon. Most pans are made this way nowadays. They are lined with a teflon lining to stop things from getting stuck to the surface. You have to be extremely careful with these pans, and you can't use metal utensils on these pans or these pans will become scratched. I'm quite sure you all have experienced what I'm telling you.

However this wasn't consistently how pans were. Men and women used to cook in pans made from cast iron. Non stick teflon didn't exist at that time, and they had to have something tough that had the ability to be around for quite awhile. They needed to have something that was created once, and used for every meal. And cast iron was the preferred pan of choice.

These pans were known to be super sturdy and could hold up to just about everything, from intense heat to cold, to even being thrown on the tile floor. These were the types of pans that people used before modern technology. These pans lasted 30 years or more and were given down from your parents.

But at some point during this time, a lot of people let go of the affection for cast iron pans. A pan much more convenient appeared and we forgot about the tried and true cast iron pan. These days most people make use of cheap skillets that are not well made, that can be cleaned easily. The reason for this is because cast iron takes a little bit of extra work. Yet if you do that extra extra effort, the rewards are very worth it.

Not everyone has stopped using these pans all the way. I myself use cast iron all the time, and they are totally beginning to stage a big revival. And this is because regular people have started to grasp the positives.

Permit me to tell you a couple of the attributes that help to make cooking with cast iron sweet:

First and foremost, things cooked in a cast iron pan taste delicious. The food really tastes so much better than the things that you cook in a typical pan made out of teflon. That pertains to what is commonly referred to as the 'seasoning'. The 'seasoning' happens from never washing with dish soap to the pans surface, and maintaining the flavors that are created from food cooked in the pan. These tastes stay locked up in the pans porous surface, and over time begin to generate delicious, robust tastes in the food you cook in your cast iron pan.

Secondly, pans that are made out of cast iron are completely stick free if you treat these pans as you should. The pans don't have to have non stick teflon or any other artificial chemical to keep your food from getting stuck. The main reason is because immediately following each time you use it, you coat the pan with a really fine covering of cooking grease. This cooking grease aids to lock in the 'seasoning' and build a perfect surface that won't allow food to stick. Over time, the non stick surface becomes long lasting.

Last but not least, you can cook anything with pans made from cast iron. You can grill fresh vegetables on the stove top, cook steak, or even bake your pan in the stove. Cast iron pans are really versatile. Many times I simply leave my cast iron pan right on the stove in order to bake with my pan anytime I have to.

As I said before, cooking with cast iron has a lot of pluses. I didn't even talk about all of them here. Nonetheless if you could be thinking about acquiring a cast iron pan, I really think you should. These are a great addition and will really complement the way you cook. Besides, cast iron pans will stay in great shape for a long time. Hopefully a ton more families will start using cast iron like people did in the 'old days'.
